Saturday Afternoon UPDATE - Fundraising for the final weekend in April for the Campus at Greenhill 2012 Wallingford Fireworks Celebration - Wallingford Fireworks Fund

Today is Saturday the 28th – I will be out front of Holy Trinity Church starting at about 4:30PM this afternoon for an hour or so with Barbara Kapi from the fundraising committee collecting your donations.

On Sunday the 29th I’ll be back at Holy Trinity with Barbara from 9:30AM to around 12:30PM or so.

These collection efforts this weekend are going to be backed by the additional pledge to donate matching funds for all citizen / private donations for the month up to $5,000.00 made by Campus at Greenhill.

Last week, the week ending April 21st, we collected $938.00. That plus the prior two weeks of collections of $2,553.00 means we are sitting at $3,491.00.

With just the weekend remaining we really need to come in with that final $1,509.00 to get the full match of $5,000.00

We need additional help from people that can spend a couple of hours in the morning, or really any time, standing around collecting.

If you can help out please let me know.

You can make your donations payable to the Wallingford Fireworks Fund and mail them in to us if you’re not going to be around this weekend:

Please consider stopping by this weekend if you can to drop off your donation – we need to have it on hand by the end of the day on Monday April 30th to have it count as part of the funds collected for the matching donation pledge.

Anything mailed on Saturday may not reach us in time.

As always, if anyone has any questions of me please feel free to reach out by calling 860 614 6069 or via email at Jason@Zandri.net.

imageimage

The Campus at Greenhill 2012 Wallingford Fireworks Celebration fundraising committee will meet on Tuesday April 3rd at 7:30PM at Gaetano’s in Wallingford.

The meeting is open to anyone that wishes to attend. You can come to observe or to find out how to informally help us out (one task, one off, etc.) or you can choose to join up and help us out regularly.

We are planning to discuss at the meeting our current collection levels for the fund as well as the announcement that is going to hit tomorrow (keep an eye on the blog) and how we are going leverage it over the next 30 days.

If you can come on Tuesday April 3rd at 7:30PM at Gaetano’s we’d love to have you join us for the brainstorming.

For those of you that cannot make the meeting but who may still want to help, we are still collecting at Dunkin Donuts in town and we need people to man the shifts.

My father and I are still out collecting each weekend; if you can stand out to collect all or part of the time on Thursday or Friday mornings at any of the Dunkin Donuts locations please let me know. We try to go for 6:30AM to 9:30AM but even if you can only take part of a shift that is better than nothing.

This upcoming weekend being a holiday weekend we are also going to be out at Stop and Shop on Friday afternoon – we received permission from them to stand from 2PM to 6PM so we can use a hand there as well.

As always, you can help out just by making a donation and / or by spreading the word to your friends and neighbors. Since 2010, the Wallingford Fireworks Celebration has been 100% funded by donations from everyday citizens of Wallingford – the only way it continues is with your backing, support and donations.

Your tax deductible donation can be sent to:

Preliminary information for the 2012 collection season / Conversation with Mayor Dickinson

Over the next few days and into next week I am going to get new posts online as to where we are and what we’re doing with the fund.

I placed a call to Mayor Dickinson regarding the date of the event; with July 4th being on a Wednesday and Wallingford generally trying to have the show on a Saturday the town needs to decide on whether to have the show the week before on June30 or the Saturday after – July 7th.

Either way, and regardless of which date is picked, the Mayor has indicated to me that the funds need to be donated to the town by the close of business on Friday May 25th or Wallingford cannot commit to the event.

I asked regarding partnering with the Wallingford Fireworks Fund and paying the town services as Meriden does in their agreement with Westfield which allows Meriden to maintain their annual display but he said he could not foresee the town having the approximately $13,000.00 available to pay for police overtime, fire department services, public works and the like when they are staring down the proposed hikes in the cost of essential services in town.

So the bottom line folks – for the third year now we are on our own.

I am awaiting final totals from Mayor Dickinson and / or from Comptroller James Bowes as to the town services costs. At the same time I am going to solicit bids again from vendors as I did last year.

We needed to raise $25,000.00 last year and I have to imagine we’ll need to raise as much, if not a little more this year so that is the initial target I am going to set for 2012.

WALLINGFORD — If Jason Zandri has learned one thing in his past two efforts to raise money for the town’s Fourth of July fireworks celebration, it’s that you can never start too early.

Zandri, a Democratic town councilor, has headed the effort to pay for the fireworks since the town dropped the festivities from its budget in 2010. He’s already started a blog to promote this year’s fundraising efforts, and will be holding a meeting soon, looking for people to join a fundraising board to oversee the operations.

“We’re looking this year to get a formal fundraising committee established,”Zandri said. For the past two years, Zandri, his father, Geno, and Republican Town Councilor Craig Fishbein have collected most of the donations. But Jason Zandri said it can’t continue with just the three of them.

“It can’t just be the Jason, Craig and Geno show,” he said. “We lucked out doing it twice like that.”

The first year the money was raised, Jason Zandri worked from his Wallingford home and his flexible schedule allowed him time for fundraising outside Stop & Shop and Dunkin’ Donuts. But last year, Zandri took a job in New York City and had to restrict his efforts to the weekends.

“For 16 weeks that’s all I did on the weekends,” Jason Zandri said.

With his new responsibilities as a councilor, putting in the same effort this year will be “impossible.”

“I’m just too involved,” Jason Zandri said. “I have to tend to my council duties, and the majority of the fundraising comes during budget season.”

Fishbein agreed, noting that he too became busy in 2011 and didn’t help out as much as he did the year before. “We need all the help we can get,” Fishbein said.

Jason Zandri said he hopes more of the people who come out to the show will help pay the costs associated with it. Many of the donations in the past two years have come from large businesses and not individuals.

Fishbein said he was disappointed that two fundraisers scheduled last year — a matinee movie and a concert at Zandri’s Stillwood Inn — drew small numbers of people.

“It was very discouraging,” Fishbein said.

Fundraising efforts at the show last year also didn’t garner as much money as was expected, Fishbein said.

Jason Zandri will once again ask the mayor if the town can pay a portion of the costs, such as the police and public works overtime, but he said he wasn’t optimistic the town would put money toward the project. The fund has about$1,000 left over from last year to put toward the 2012 show.

Last year the $24,150 for the show was raised with little time to spare. Mayor William W. Dickinson Jr. said the check was delivered to the town at 2:30 p.m. on May 27, 2011, only hours before his 5 p.m. deadline.

A $2,500 donation from New Life Church helped the charity reach its goal in 2011. Similarly, a $5,000 gift from Choate Rosemary Hall in 2010 pushed the fund past its $30,000 goal.
